PHU QUOC TO INCREASE AIRPORT CAPACITY TO 18 MILLION PASSENGERS FOR APEC 2027
On May 9, the Ministry of Construction and the People’s Committee of Kien Giang Province officially announced the expansion plan for Phu Quoc International Airport, covering the period from 2021 to 2030 with a vision toward 2050. This is a key move to modernize infrastructure, anticipate the tourism growth wave, and prepare for the APEC Leaders’ Week 2027 expected to take place in Phu Quoc.
4.5x Capacity Boost – 18 Million Passengers Annually
Under the new plan, Phu Quoc Airport’s capacity will be raised from 4 million to 18 million passengers/year by 2030, targeting 50 million passengers/year by 2050. The total investment is expected to reach over VND 26,500 billion by 2030 and nearly VND 25,800 billion for the post-2030 phase.
Key Expansion Items Include:
- Construction of a second runway (3,300m) in addition to the existing 3,500m runway
- Expansion of the aircraft apron to 70–80 parking positions, capable of handling wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 747, B787, Airbus A350
- A new passenger terminal designed by CPG Consultants (Singapore), inspired by the image of a phoenix and integrated with advanced technologies:
- Biometric identification
- Remote check-in
- Automated baggage sorting
Cutting down check-in time to just 15–30 seconds per passenger
VVIP Terminal and APEC Support Facilities
A separate VVIP terminal will be built to welcome heads of state, designed by Italian architect Marco Casamonti – the mastermind behind the iconic Kiss Bridge in Phu Quoc – inspired by the image of a sea eagle.
Additional project components include:
- Expanded cargo terminal
- Air traffic control radar system
- Auxiliary infrastructure to support long-haul international flights from Europe and the US
Synchronizing Infrastructure for APEC 2027
Alongside the airport expansion, Phu Quoc has introduced a series of large-scale projects to serve APEC 2027, including:
- 10,000m² Convention & Exhibition Center
- International Media Center
- Cultural and Art Center
- Duty-Free Trade Center
- Road network connecting the airport to the city center
This expansion not only aims to serve the APEC event but also paves the way for Phu Quoc to emerge as a modern international aviation hub in Southeast Asia, positioning the island as a strategic destination on the global tourism and investment map.
