Best Time to Visit Phu Quoc

Before planning your trip to Phu Quoc, it's essential to understand the weather and climate of the island. Phu Quoc has a tropical monsoon climate with two distinct seasons: the rainy season and the dry season.

  • The rainy season extends from May to September, during which "Emerald Island" experiences frequent downpours. Some days witness sudden, brief showers, while other stretches may be plagued by relentless rain for an entire week. Generally, this period is characterized by sporadic bouts of rain that come and go unpredictably. If you are not constrained by time, it is advisable to avoid visiting Phu Quoc during this period. Additionally, as this coincides with the summer break for students, options for families may be limited. Naturally, the likelihood of encountering rain during this season is significantly higher than in the dry season.
  • Similar to the dry season on the mainland, Phu Quoc's dry season lasts from October to April of the following year. This time sees minimal rainfall, abundant sunshine, and tranquil, clear waters. It is an ideal period for travel, exploration, photography, and leisure activities. This season also attracts a substantial influx of international visitors to Phu Quoc, while the number of domestic tourists, although present, is not as high as during the summer months. This presents the perfect opportunity to explore the wonders of Phu Quoc.

Guide to Traveling to Phu Quoc

To reach Phu Quoc, you have two options. The first is to fly directly to the island. The second involves traveling overland (by motorcycle or bus) to the Rach Gia or Ha Tien ports, where you can then board a speedboat or ferry to the island.

Traveling by Air:

Currently, domestic flights offer direct routes to Phu Quoc from Hanoi, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Can Tho, and Ho Chi Minh City.

Traveling by Speedboat, Bus, and Ferry:

To reach Phu Quoc from Ho Chi Minh City, you will navigate through two stages:
Stage 1: From Ho Chi Minh City to Rach Gia or Ha Tien

  • Means of Transportation: Bus or Motorcycle
  • For buses: Head to the Western Bus Station and choose a bus to Rach Gia or Ha Tien. Some popular bus companies include Kumho, Phuong Trang, Mai Linh, and Tuan Nga.

Stage 2: From Rach Gia or Ha Tien to the island
Means of Transportation: Speedboat or Ferry:

  • Traveling by Speedboat: Currently, two companies operate speedboats: Ngoc Thanh and Superdong. The journey takes just 1 hour and 15 minutes from Ha Tien and 2 hours and 15 minutes from Rach Gia, significantly faster than traveling by ferry. Speedboats can accommodate motorcycles, but note that you must book your tickets in advance, as they only have space for 8 to 10 motorcycles, and identification is required for ticket purchase.
  • Traveling by Ferry: The ferry is also a popular choice for those traveling to the island, as ferry tickets are much more affordable than speedboat tickets. Additionally, ferries can carry a greater number of motorcycles and even cars. The Thanh Thoi ferry is the most well-known and safest option; however, it is considerably slower, taking about 3 to 4 hours to reach Phu Quoc from Ha Tien.
